It’s the little things that make life funny

My husband and I love our mornings together.  They are normally quiet and uneventful as I get ready for work and get our seven year old daughter ready for school.  Our routine is rather simple, eat a quick breakfast, have a cup of coffee and watch the local news on KRTV Channel 3.

On Monday, November 5th, the news started out as any other broadcast.  There was a story about the small town of Opportunity, Montana.  This community is having their share of problems with contaminated soil being buried in their area.  A few of the residents were interviewed and voiced their concerns of this contamination and the horrifying prospect of their property values going down.

My husband and I sipped our coffee.  There wasn’t anything exciting about this story, I hadn’t even heard of Opportunity, Montana.

At the end of the segment, as the Channel 3 news team’s camera slowly scanned the town’s tainted streets, a lone figure came into the foreground and hobbled across the road.  A big, black three legged dog.

I stopped short and did a double take.  My goodness, did that dog only have three legs?  That couldn’t have been, could it?  Now, normally, at 6:30 am, I turn the news off since it just repeats the same stories over the next half hour.  But not today!  We sat there watching the program repeat itself, giggling over the prospect of a town named Opportunity, complaining about being contaminated and showing a three legged dog hobbling across the street.

Yes!  There it was again!  The black three legged dog at the very end of the story, limping across the street was just too much!  We busted a gut laughing so hard with tears rolling down our cheeks!  If this story had aired on April 1st, I would swear it was all a good joke.  Was this dog the town mascot?  Was this the poster child to emphasize the quandary of Opportunity, Montana?  What is happening there?  Is the contagion so bad that animal’s legs are falling off?
But, hey, the town’s name says it all!  That dog’s name must be Lucky!

I laughed all the way to work that morning.  I had to know!  Was that dog staged or was it just a fluke?  Did the news team drum up that dog somewhere and coax it across the street in front of the camera with a treat or something?  My curiosity got the best of me.  I called KRTV Channel 3 and spoke to Jenna.  I told her about the dog and she said she would find out and call me back.  Sure enough, about an hour later, I got the call!  Jenna was trying to control her laughter as she told me that even the top editors had missed that dog in the clip.  The dog was just a fluke!  She politely thanked me for bringing it to their attention and giving them all a great laugh for the day.  She also told me, that so far, I was the only one who had seemed to catch that particular droll and no one else had called about it.  Needless to say, that three legged dog in contaminated Opportunity, Montana, made my day!
