Pondering politics
Geeguy and Dave are most excellent.
Despite being put on by the upstart bloggers, mainstream media attended, and there was a decent turnout of people. but it makes me think about what is expected of out elected officials. We expect them to show up for these things. We expect them to answer our questions, and there were questions. Perhaps they should expect us to show up too. Do you complain about our politicians? Were you there?
One of the main things that struck me was the type of people that want to be elected. I think we have a pretty good selection of qualified candidates. I would have preferred a couple of the mayoral candidates as commissioners though, because I feel that role would fit them better.
Gee noted that Diane Jovik Kuntz had a target on her back. I agree.
But. She is an incumbent, and she showed up. She was the only one present that can be held accountable for the past, as she pointed out she has beeen a City Commissioner for eight years. So yeah, she got jumped on a bit.
(She also stated that “public policy is not dictated by a vote”. I disagree.)
However, at the end of the night, I felt I had a better handle on how these people react, how their thought processes work, and what they see as the “the job” of the positions they are running for. I will go into all that much more later.
I saw a sucessful, informative, well structured debate last night. Thanks to all who were involved with making it happen.
